A Note from the Maine Harness Horsemen's Association

One of the unfortunate news items for this quarter is the rejection of LD 1280 by the legislature. This was a bill to establish a Southern Maine Racino project. The State of Maine seems to talk the walk of new jobs and revenue but when it comes down to walking down that path it doesn't happen. A lot of time and effort went into this legislation, but the end result is the same. Perhaps the state should build another paper mill or campground. Enough good things can't be said about Pete Connell and Ocean Properties. I don't know what more they could have done to get this bill passed. They are truly friends of Maine Harness Racing. Meanwhile the 2016 season has begun. Scarborough Downs is again functioning to the best of their ability. Lots of horses and they drop purses and dashes on the second weekend. Unbelievable. The board will be meeting with them in the very near future to discuss a possible contract. We need a contract and they will need horseman's support for some of their other proposed projects. Bangor opens the first weekend in May. There was a successful contract meeting with them on the 4th and we signed another 3 year contract. It is my understanding that the new appointees to the racing commission will be confirmed on April 7. The MSHRC has been unable to meet due to the lack of a quorum. There are several items hanging out there that need to be resolved. Keep in mind that Harness at Hadlock is scheduled for May 17 this year. It is publicity that is priceless. I am sure that for many kids this may be their first introduction not only to horses, but also harness racing. The Sea Dogs are a great organization to work with also.
