As the fair season begins to wind down and the leaves continuously fall from the trees, harness racing in Maine resumes at both commercial tracks. With the addition of three race dates for Bangor Historic Track on November 8, 11, and 12th, the horsemen will have sufficient opportunities to race until the middle of November when racing will only be offered at our Southern Maine facility in Scarborough.
After the article written by David Sharp of the Associated Press appeared in the Portland Press Herald on September 2nd with the headline, “Slot revenue decline hits harness racing”, I received another call from a reporter that wanted to know what the sport can do to attract more spectators. The answer is not an easy one. First of all, I explained that since the approval of slots in Bangor in 2003, much has changed.
